Philippines Connection
Kathy Biggle met Irene Guerret when they were both volunteers working in Thailand in 1999. They stayed in touch and when Irene returned to her home town in the Philippines she set up a community rehabilitation project for children and adults with disabilities in the mountain province. Kathy visited Irene in the Philippines and learnt about her work and then Kathy was able to invite Irene to the UK to learn about social welfare over here. Kathy has carried out fundraising activities for Irene's project in the past and now that the area where Irene lives has been devastated by two typhoons she is fundraising again to help Irene with local relief efforts.

Philippines Typhoon Disaster

In September the mountain areas of the Philippines and the capital city, Manilla, were struck by two typhoons within a two week period. Forecasts state that another typhoon is on its way.
The area has been devasted by the floods and landslides caused by the typhoons. The current death toll is 650 but is expected to rise as more bodies are recovered;
Homes have been destroyed leaving thousands homeless; Crops have been lost as the typhoons struck during the harvest season;
The infrastructure in the region is damaged meaning that power supplies are down and that clean drinking water is unavailable;
Flooding has made it difficult for relief agencies to reach the affected areas.
Money raised at the auction will contribute to:
Building temporary shelters for those who have lost their homes;
Providing aid to farmers whose land and crops have been destroyed, including vegetable seeds;
Assisting in the finance of a Food for Work Programe, whereby footpaths and trails will be rebuilt in exchange for food;
Financing the provision of disability relief, providing food, clothes and school supplies to educational centres;
Establishing a Livelihood Project designed to help people start again;
Providing scholarships for students who can no longer afford to continue their studies.
Your money will be directed through the Heaven of Care Resources Centre Inc
